Ishihara Test
AvailableRed-green screening with pseudo-isochromatic plates (hidden numbers/shapes).
Reliable for screening online. Our version uses freshly generated plates so answers can't be memorized.
OpenFarnsworth D-15
AvailableArrange color caps in order to reveal protan / deutan / tritan confusion axes.
Classifies the type and separates moderate+ deficiencies; scored with the Vingrys & King-Smith method. Type is an estimate on an uncalibrated screen.
OpenHRR (Hardy-Rand-Rittler)
AvailableSymbol plates that both screen and classify, including blue-yellow (tritan).
Language-free; screens red-green AND blue-yellow and grades the degree. Blue-yellow is least reliable on an uncalibrated screen.
OpenFarnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue
AvailableFine color-discrimination score from arranging 85 hue caps across 4 boxes.
Long and very sensitive to screen calibration, so scores are relative — but our version gives a Total Error Score and the classic polar plot.
OpenHard Color Blind Test
AvailableThe adaptive cone test in hard mode: contrast drops to your threshold on each cone, 3 seconds per plate, no second look.
Same scoring as the standard test — stricter about hesitation, not more precise about your cones. Good for stress-testing a borderline result.
OpenTritan Test (blue-yellow)
AvailableBlue-yellow screening on the S-cone (tritan) axis, which Ishihara plates don't test at all.
Screens the axis plate tests miss. Least reliable of the three on an uncalibrated screen — displays render short-wavelength blues worst — so the blue plates are kept deliberately easier to avoid false positives.

A research gold standard, but requires calibrated display hardware.
Tetrachromacy “Test”
Clinical onlyWhether someone has a fourth cone class — the ability to distinguish lights that match for ordinary color vision.
Impossible on a screen, not merely unreliable: separating a tetrachromat needs two lights that are identical to a trichromat but differ at the fourth cone, and a three-primary display cannot produce that pair. The quizzes claiming to do it measure your monitor. We explain what can and cannot be established.
OpenFarnsworth Lantern (FALANT)
Clinical onlySignal-light recognition — pairs of colored lights at a distance, the way a pilot or mariner reads them in practice.
Cannot be reproduced on a screen: it depends on calibrated light sources at a fixed distance and small angular size. We explain how it works, who still uses it, and what a pass requires.
OpenRabin Cone Contrast Test (CCT)
Clinical onlyCone-isolated contrast thresholds — how faint a color each of your L, M and S cones can still use to read a letter. Scored out of 100 per cone, per eye.
Cannot be reproduced on a screen: the letters must be invisible to two cone classes and matched in luminance to the background, which needs a calibrated display. The FAA also prohibits downloaded and printed color vision tests outright. We explain the scoring and the USAF vs FAA cut-offs.
OpenWaggoner CCVT
Clinical onlySoftware plate test that screens red-green, then quantifies protan and deutan degree separately, plus a tritan sub-test. One of three computer tests the FAA accepts.
Sold as software rather than offered as a web test — and a self-administered run does not count for certification, which the FAA requires to be done in person. We cover the section scores and the independent accuracy data.
OpenAnomaloscope (Rayleigh match)
DemoOptical color-matching instrument — the clinical gold standard for red-green type and degree. Match a red-green mixture to a yellow.
We offer an interactive demonstration of the Rayleigh match. It can't classify your vision — a screen's yellow is itself red+green, so both halves become identical light and no observer is separated — but it shows how the instrument works and why online ≠ clinical. Red-green only, not tritan.
