What are the symptoms of color blindness?

Almost every symptom is a version of the same thing: two colors that look clearly different to most people land in the same place for you. That is why the condition is so easy to live with unnoticed. Nothing looks wrong from the inside — the world is full of color, richly so. What is missing is contrast between particular pairs, and you cannot miss a contrast you have never seen.

The practical signs are ordinary. Picking a ripe strawberry from the leaves, telling medium-rare from well-done, reading a red pen on white paper, matching navy to black, spotting a green charging light on a grey laptop, or following a red line on a route map when a green one crosses it. People often describe frustration with color-coded information — charts, subway maps, status lights, game minimaps — long before they describe frustration with color itself.

There is no pain, no blur, and no change in sharpness. If your vision is also blurred, dim, or patchy, something else is going on and it should be checked by an eye-care professional.

Symptoms of color blindness in children

Children have no baseline to compare against, so they rarely report a problem. What adults notice instead is behaviour. A child may color a tree trunk green and its leaves brown, name colors confidently but inconsistently, avoid color-sorting games, or ask which crayon is which rather than picking one. Some go quiet during color naming at school because being corrected is embarrassing.

Teachers often spot it before parents do, since so much early-years material is color-coded. Worksheets that ask for "the red group" or reading schemes organised by colour band can turn into a daily struggle that looks like inattention or slow learning rather than a vision difference.

Because inherited deficiency is present from birth and stable, finding it early changes nothing medically but a great deal practically — it lets a school label by shape or text instead of colour, and it stops a child being marked down for something their eyes never showed them.

Color vision that changes later in life

Inherited color blindness does not appear in adulthood and does not get worse over time. If your color vision genuinely changes — colors that used to look distinct start blending, one eye sees colour differently from the other, or reds look faded where they never used to — that is an acquired change, and it has a cause worth finding.

Acquired color vision changes are associated with cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, optic nerve inflammation, head injury, and some medications. They more often affect the blue-yellow axis than red-green, and they frequently affect one eye more than the other, which is a useful tell: cover one eye, then the other, and compare a strongly coloured object.

None of that is a reason to panic, and none of it can be sorted out by a screening on a phone. It is a reason to book an eye exam and mention the change specifically.

Do symptoms tell you which type you have?

Loosely, and not reliably. Trouble with reds looking dark points toward protan; green-brown confusion with normal brightness points toward deutan; blue-green confusion with washed-out yellows points toward tritan.
