How a hidden-digit plate works

The trick is in the colors. On a hidden-digit plate, the figure dots and the background dots are chosen so that most people with normal color vision blend them together and see an even field, while someone who confuses those particular colors latches onto the difference that is left and reads the digit. The deficiency, oddly, is what reveals the number.

It is the same confusion-line science as a normal plate, just aimed the other way. A normal plate puts the figure where a deficient eye struggles to separate it; a hidden-digit plate puts it where many color-normal eyes can't, while a deficient eye sometimes can.

Why many viral 'reverse color blind tests' aren't real
