Why HRR fits ages 5 and up
The HRR test (Hardy-Rand-Rittler) uses simple symbols — a circle, a triangle, and a cross — hidden in colored dots instead of numbers. Because it's symbol-based and language-free, it suits children from about age 5 as well as teens and adults.
Unlike the Ishihara test, the clinical HRR both screens and roughly classifies color vision deficiency. This online version screens red-green vision with freshly generated plates and is a self-check, not a diagnosis.
Each plate hides a symbol — a circle, triangle, or cross — in a field of colored dots. People with typical color vision see it clearly; a red-green difference can make it hard to find or look like a different symbol.
Tap the symbol you (or your child) see. It's language-free, so it works for younger children and anyone who'd rather not read numbers. Tap 'Nothing' if no symbol stands out.
We count which plates were missed and on which color axis, to flag whether a red-green difference is likely and hint at the type. On an uncalibrated screen, treat type and degree as estimates, not a diagnosis.
