Do Color Blind Glasses Work?

Short answer

Filter glasses help some people separate certain colors, especially with mild-to-moderate red-green deficiency. They do not cure color blindness or restore missing cone function.

Color blind glasses work for some people, but not the way the ads imply. The tinted lenses can make reds and greens look more separated and more saturated, which helps certain people with mild to moderate red-green color blindness tell confusable colors apart. They do not cure color blindness, they cannot add a color your eyes can't physically register, and they do little for strong cases, for the blue-yellow type, or in an official color vision test. Whether a pair helps you comes down to your type and severity, so it is worth knowing those before you spend a few hundred dollars.

What the glasses actually do

Most color blind glasses use a filter that removes a narrow band of light right where the red and green cones overlap the most. In red-green color blindness those two cone types respond too much alike, so the brain gets only a weak signal for the difference between them. Cutting the overlap widens that gap, and reds and greens come back looking more distinct.

The catch hides in that description: the glasses sharpen a signal you already have. They do not give you a cone you are missing or a color channel you were born without. That is why they are an enhancement rather than a fix, and why the effect ends the moment you take them off.

Who they help, and who they don't

The people most likely to notice a change have mild to moderate anomalous trichromacy, the red-weak or green-weak type where all three cones are present but two are shifted toward each other. There is an overlap to work with, and the filter works with it.

The glasses do much less, or nothing, for several groups. A dichromat is missing the red or green cone outright, so there is no overlapping signal to separate and little to gain. The blue-yellow (tritan) type runs on a different axis that these red-green filters are not built for. Total color blindness is not addressed at all. This is the practical reason to know your type first: it predicts whether glasses are even worth trying.

What 'working' actually feels like

Expectations cause most of the disappointment. People who do benefit often say certain colors look richer or jump out, especially reds, pinks, and purples, and the effect is usually strongest outdoors in bright daylight rather than under indoor light. It can take a few minutes to settle in, and a dramatic first reaction is as much surprise as it is new information.

What the glasses do not do is make color vision normal. You are not suddenly seeing every color a person with full color vision sees, and the limits stay put: subtle shades remain subtle, dim light blunts the benefit, and some people notice very little. The research is mixed, too. The defensible takeaway is modest, highly individual changes in how colors look or how much they contrast, not restored normal color vision.

Where they don't help: tests, screens, and the law

Color blind glasses will not get you through a color vision test. Plate tests such as the Ishihara are meant to be read with the naked eye, and examiners for jobs and licenses generally insist on it. Even ignoring the rules, the glasses shift colors rather than restore accurate ones, so they can change which plates you read without making your color vision dependable.

For roles with a real color standard, such as aviation, the military, the merchant navy, and some driving categories, a pass has to be earned without aids. Should you try a pair?

If you have a mild to moderate red-green deficiency and your interest is everyday life rather than passing a test, a pair can be a genuine if subtle upgrade. Check your type and severity first so your expectations match what is possible, buy from somewhere with a return window, and judge them outdoors in daylight before deciding.

There are free ways to sample the idea on a screen, too. A phone or computer filter can boost color separation in photos and apps with no hardware, which is a low-risk way to see whether stronger separation helps you at all before paying for lenses.
