Are Dogs Color Blind? What Dogs (and Cats) Actually See
No, dogs are not fully color blind — they just see fewer colors than we do. People have three cone types; dogs have two, so they see the world roughly the way a red-green color blind person does: blues and yellows come through, while reds and greens fade into grey-brown. Cats are similar. A dog is not choosing to ignore the bright red ball on the green lawn; to its eyes, the ball and the grass are nearly the same dull shade.

Are dogs color blind?
Not in the way people often mean. "Color blind" suggests a world of grey, but dogs do see color — just a narrower range. Human eyes have three cone types, tuned to red, green and blue. Dogs have only two, missing the one that separates red from green. That makes them dichromats, the same broad category as a person with strong red-green color blindness.
The blue-yellow axis remains. Dogs can tell blue and yellow apart well, but reds, oranges and greens collapse toward a muddy yellow-grey. A red apple, a green lawn and an orange cone all sit in a similar band for them.
What colors can dogs see?
Think of a dog's palette as blues, yellows and a lot of grey-brown in between. Blue and yellow are vivid and easy to separate. Anything that depends on the red-green difference is where it falls apart, including many colors we treat as bold and obvious.
That matters for toys. A bright red or orange toy, marketed to catch a human eye, is close to invisible to a dog on grass. A blue or yellow toy stands out far better. Dogs find the red ball mostly by smell and movement, not by spotting its color.
Are cats color blind too?
Cats are also dichromats and see a muted, blue-yellow-leaning version of color, broadly like dogs. Color vision is not their strong suit — cats are built for low light and motion, with eyes optimized for hunting at dawn and dusk rather than for picking out hues. Color is simply less central to how a cat reads the world.
Why animals see fewer colors (and some see more)
Color vision is a trade-off, not a ladder from worse to better. Dogs and cats give up red-green discrimination but keep excellent motion detection and night vision, which matters far more for a predator. Many mammals are dichromats for the same reason.
Plenty of animals go the other way. Most birds, reptiles and many insects are tetrachromats with four cone types, seeing into the ultraviolet that is invisible to us. Humans sit in the middle — better than a dog at telling red from green, worse than a pigeon at seeing the full picture.
